Advancing Inclusive Excellence During AAPI Heritage Month

AAPI Heritage Month: Panel: AAPI Women Leaders at the Intersection of Technology and

The month of May marks Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month—a time to appreciate the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of AAPI communities. It is also an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing work required to construct spaces where diversity is not only acknowledged but meaningfully supported through inclusive excellence.

Inclusive excellence calls for intentional action—embedding equity, access, and belonging into the systems, technology, and decisions that shape our institutions. This is especially critical at the intersection of technology and research, where innovation has the power to either boost disparities or help dismantle them.

It’s important to confront common stereotypes that continue to shape how AAPI communities are perceived. Stereotypes like the “model minority myth,” which frames AAPI individuals as “successful” is problematic because it can obscure the diversity and complexity within AAPI communities. It can also mask real issues, including underrepresentation in leadership, barriers to advancement, and the silencing of those whose experiences do not fit the common narrative.

Stereotypes that position AAPI professionals as technically strong but not leadership-oriented, or as passive and less vocal, can have substantial impacts on hiring, promotion, and recognition. Inclusive excellence challenges us to actively question and disrupt these narratives, create space for more authentic and expansive understandings of leadership and contributions

This month, we are creating space to elevate these perspectives through an upcoming panel featuring senior AAPI women leaders working at the intersection of technology and research. These leaders bring a wealth of experience navigating complex systems, driving technological innovation, and championing inclusive practices within their organizations.

Panel Focus: AAPI Women Leaders at the Intersection of Technology and Research

Grounded in the theme “From Representation to Innovation: AAPI Women Leaders Advancing Information Technology, Equity, and Research,” this conversation will explore:
