Read about some of the remarkable women in IT at UC. Compiled by members of the UC Women in Technology Committee, this list, installment three of three, is just a sampling of the range of accomplishments that UC women in tech contribute – every day, every year.
Kathy Huang, application developer, Information Technology Solutions, UCR. Developed a process to efficiently load hundreds of daily invoices from a third-party vendor into the campus purchasing system. If anything goes wrong, it generates a report to purchasing to ensure a timely response.
Shannon Weber, founder and director, PleasePrEPMe, Department of Family and Community Medicine, UCSF. Developed the first searchable, location responsive PrEP provider directory with online chat navigation services — helping bridge people seeking information online with sex-positive information and local clinic services.
Briandy Walden, associate director, Student and Academic Services, UCI. Identifies underserved areas within the academic IT space and improves workflows utilizing user-centric design methodologies to enhance the quality of teaching and learning at UCI.
Raffaella D’Auria, assistant adjunct professor, Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, Office of Information Technology, and Institute for Digital Research and Education, UCLA. As a computational scientist, teaches environmental courses for both the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and UCLA, presents seminars on high performance computing topics, and provides workshops in running applications on the Hoffman2 computing cluster.
Mary Northup, programmer supervisor, IET Enterprise Infrastructure Services, UCD. Has been pivotal in keeping campus authentication and authorization systems working while dealing with the change from PPS to UC Path.
Azra Ayers, project manager, Information Technology Solutions, UCR. Organized large cross-functional teams during a massive data center migration project, Project Genesis.
Jen Bellenger, change and engagement lead, bConnected service team, Information Services and Technology, UCB. Creates and executes the change management and communication strategies for G Suite (Google), Box, and other collaboration services. Also a member of the One IT Committee.
Davida Johnson, managing director, Practices and Community Partnerships, Office of Information Technology, UCLA. Initiated the first UC Women in IT initiative nearly 10 years ago, and oversees a number of high-level academic and industry partnerships in IT professional development, leadership, and innovation.
Janine Carlson, service desk and desktop support manager, College of Letters and Science, UCD. Supervised IT support operations for the largest UCD college through a significant expansion in the scope of service including doubling the number of customers supported (faculty, staff, and graduate students), while maintaining consistently high customer satisfaction.
Rosemary Braden, IT help desk consultant, Office of Information Technology, UCM. Was an integral team member in redesigning the VPN solution, and led the effort to complete user knowledgebase articles.
Hemalatha Remaiah, financial systems manager, Information Technology Services, UCOP. Leads a team that recently completed a fast-track Oracle Enterprise Planning and Budgeting Cloud Services implementation in record time (5 months) and is supporting a project to transform legacy financial accounting, procurement, travel and expense, and contract and grant management solutions to Oracle Cloud Financials.
Valerie Jones, manager, Business Intelligence and Data Warehouse Team, Office of Information Technology, UCI. Oversees the growth and operations of the data warehouse program, which is charged with providing integrated, secured, cleaned, and consistent data for campuswide reporting and analysis.
Sarah Do, desktop technician, Infrastructure and Operations, UCSC. Coordinated the migration of 25 computers in the Colleges, Housing, and Education Services department from a retiring Windows 7 operating system to a fully supported Windows 10.
Annelie Rugg, director and Humanities CIO, Humanities Technology, UCLA. A leader in faculty development and instructional technology solutions, including serving as a founding contributor to the first campuswide LMS and the formation of the Digital Research Consortium (DRC) for digital humanities-adjacent scholars and students across campus.
Debra Richardson, emeritus professor and founding dean, Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Science, UCI. Has served on the leadership team of the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) since its inception and is an inaugural advisory member of the Women in Technology Irvine organization.
Kelly Arruda, project manager, Office of Information Technology, UCLA. Manages the operations of several campus IT governance groups, serving as a neutral liaison and working to ensure consistency, continuity, and alignment between the groups as UCLA transitions to a new IT governance structure.
Carol McMasters-Stone, web developer, College of Letters and Science, UCD. Led a 3 year project to consolidate 15 department and program websites to a single architecture and design template, refocusing the sites on students and improving site accessibility.
Lisa Snyder, director, Campus Research Initiatives; Office of Information Technology, UCLA. With funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, leads a team to develop VSim, a software interface that provides users with the ability to craft narratives in three-dimensional space and to embed annotations and links to primary and secondary resources and web content from within the modeled environments.
Miriam McDonald, unit IT lead, College of Engineering, UCD. Provides IT services and support to the Institute of Transportation Studies, a large multidisciplinary group.
