A new systemwide agreement for Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is now available, in addition to a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) for both GCP and G-Suite for Education. Here’s what you need to know.
What is GCP?
GCP is Google’s suite of over 135 different cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions. They run on the same infrastructure that Google uses internally for its end-user products. GCP is a “Leader” in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant.
What are the benefits of the systemwide GCP agreement?
- Discounted pricing for Google Cloud Platform:
- Spending-based discounts for Cloud Storage and Cloud Engine, in addition to any standard applicable sustained use discounts. Please see the UC systemwide agreement for details (instructions below).
- Data egress fee waiver
- Direct agreement between UC and Google including negotiated terms aligned with UC needs and policy. A direct agreement ensures more control for UC than an external agreement that inserts additional parties between UC and Google.
- Security terms compliant with the law and UC policy, and reviewed and endorsed by UC security experts
- Security practices independently verified and certified against global standards
- BAA terms compliant with the law and UC policy, reviewed and endorsed by UC BAA experts, and applicable to both GCP and the existing UC-wide G-Suite for Education agreement (#UCIMP-0109)
- Access to Google TPUs (10-30x faster than GPUs), and services like AutoML and Cloud ML Engine
How do we sign up for a GCP account?
Please complete the Customer Affiliate Order Form and send to UC’s GCP Enterprise Account Executive Sarosh Naseem.
How can I get a copy of the GCP agreement?
The systemwide GCP agreement is posted in CalUSource. Search for Agreement# 2019.001086.
What’s the background?
Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Cloud IaaS includes three suppliers in the “Leaders” quadrant. UC already had systemwide agreements with two: Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Establishing an agreement with the third, GCP, was identified as a priority by the UC IT Sourcing Committee.
A dedicated team of experts around the university made this agreement possible: John Arbolino, Jr. (UCSF), Hillary Kalay (UCOP), Steve Miley (UCSB), Brett Pollak (UCSD), Monte Ratzlaff (UCOP), David Rusting (UCOP), Scott Seaborn (UCOP), Isaac Straley (UCI), Thomas Trappler (UCOP), Josh Van Horn (UCD), and David Willson (UCB).
