UC’s March toward Shared IT Services

I’ve spoken a lot about shared services and greater cross-location collaboration since joining the University last year. UCPath, the common payroll/HR system, will represent our most aggressive step toward shared IT services the UC has ever undertaken. Significant progress has been made on creating this “new world” and, I am proud to say, it has been a very collaborative effort.

The UCPath team recently organized the IT Shared Services Alpha Summit, December 9 – 11, at UCI, with representation from all UC locations, including the UCPath Center and ITS at UCOP. An intensive three days, topics ranged from an IT operating model, governance model, and IT service management; to PeopleSoft development, an integrated testing approach, and the UCPath Center support model.

Participants presented shared services accomplishments to date, as well as challenges that still need to be addressed. It was an interactive dialog, culminating with each participant member making a public commitment to contribute to the success of the shared service workstream and to UCPath.

This is progress, and this is the power of our UC IT community coming together to meet the University’s challenges.

The idea of IT shared services is not only a terrific one, but is also a necessity in an organization such as UC. There were so many brilliant people in attendance at the Alpha Summit that it would be a waste not to tap into that talent. Was proud and happy to be part of such a group of people. Kudos to Nick Kamboj for being an excellent facilitator and contributor!
